Textual analysis 1: “Land of The Free” - By The Killers

CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • POV shots mainly used. This add a feeling of inclusion for the audience, as you feel more involved and as if you are really there. They are filmed by a hand held camera, this amplifies the feeling of involvement, and intensifies the vulnerability that the refugees were feeling, whilst also keeping the audience engaged.
  • They have included many scenes with bright and vivid flashing lights, similar to those used by the emergency services. These are alarming and help to grasp the viewers attention. However, they employ a sense of discomfort, as they reflect unhappiness and feelings of distress and terror. 
  • A thorough use of wide tracking shots. These enable us to grasp the location of the shot, and understand the extreme conditions that these refugees have to face. This sparks emotion amongst the viewer, whilst also helping to tell the story of the journey that is taken. Whilst these shots are heart-wrenching



    , they also help to display important information about the locations, in order to develop the music video.
  • There is also a frequent use of medium shots, with a focus on peoples faces and their emotions. This allows the viewer to connect more with the people in the audience. These shots also highlight families, and groups of people. There is a sense of unity amongst these people, and a feeling of strength.






EDITING

  • The scenes have a slight dimmed aspect to them. This sets more of a sombre tone to the video, as the mood is not positive.
  • Many scenes have very low light or an obscured view of the situation. This helps to keep the viewers on the edges of their seats throughout the video, and also to intensify the situation that the refugees were facing. 
  • Many scenes are short, sharp, and over quickly. This adds an alarming and uncomfortable element to the video, as there is no time to get comfortable with a scene and understand what really is happening, or to become familiar with a particular person. 





SOUND

  • The sound throughout the video is only the music by the Killers. This is obviously to heard by the refugees, meaning is non-diegetic.
  • This allows you to focus on the lyrics, but also make sense of the situation in the scene.


MISE-EN-SCENE 


  • The people in the video are obviously real refugees. This is reflected through their clothes, as they are clearly not new or specially arranged for the filming of the video. This adds another layer of vulnerability for the refugees, as they are in their raw, natural state. They are unchanged by any make up and there is no sense of shield from the outside world. 
  • The setting is also the areas, homes, and streets that these people have been living on. No props have been added, as the areas are already filled with the natural items and objects owned by the refugees. This keeps the video realistic, as they are unchanged by the filming, keeping the normality.
