Statement of Intent - 'Idioteque' protest music video

Statement of Intent  I am going to be making my protest music video to the protest song ‘Idioteque’ by the artist Radiohead. My plan is to reflect the ideas and themes presented through the lyrics of the song in my video. I will make sure to incorporate features and techniques that will be interesting to the middle/upmarket demographic of people ages 16-25. I hope to eventually create a music video that promotes the song to this audience, and displays the ideas in the song lyrics, reflecting the artists views about global warming and the environment well. I am going to target this particular audience, and reflect ideas of protest, by including elements such as vivid colours, contrasted with black and white scenes in order to create tone and mood. I will also include toned down, natural lighting in my video. This will keep the video realistic and life-like, reflecting it to the lives of the audience, adding a sense of realism. This is very important, as then the audie...

My Perfect Audience Member - ‘Idioteque', by Radiohead

My Perfect Audience Member -  ‘Idioteque', by Radiohead Leading Edge - ‘ACTIVIST’ (decided using information on www.uktribes.com ) My ideal audience member is an activist. This is a member of society that is aware of the latest information, trends and ideas in the world.  An activist is someone that is passionate about helping to change issues for the better and make the world a better place to live in. They are dedicated to making things right, in this case, my perfect audience member is passionate about protecting the environment. This is reflected through my chosen song in the lyrics " We're not scaremongering This is really happening". This adds a sense of urgency to the idea that global warming is occurring. An activist will aspire to make changes to situations that could be improved. This is presented in my chosen protest song ‘Idioteque’s' lyrics. Checklist, and key elements to include in my music video.

How my music video will attract the ideal audience: My music video is going to include features and elements similar to those found in other protest songs. For example, in order to keep the audience engaged throughout, I will include themes and ideas that they are aware of. In this case, global warming is the issue that the artist Radiohead for the song 'Idioteque' is protesting about. I will include characters that my audience can connect with and identify with. One way that I can do this, is by including characters of the same age demographic (16-25), as the audience. In turn, this will make the video more personal, and easy for the audience to feel connected to in a personal way, and relate to. It needs to be up to date in terms of social issues, and needs to include problems that are relevant in 2020, as these are the issues that the audience watching the video will feel passionate about. Global warming is a modern day issue, that the audience will be familiar with and...

Letter to the Producers

Dear Nigel Godrich,  I am writing this letter to you to request permission to use the song 'Idioteque' by the artist Radiohead in the filming of a music video.  I am making a protest music video to be played to this song that you produced in 2000, to the Album 'Kid A'. The music video will not be placed on any public domains, nor will it be used for anything that could tarnish it’s reputation.  The video will be completed by July of 2020, and will be used as part of my coursework for my A-level Media Studies course.  I hope you take the time to consider my request.  Thank you in advance.  Sincerely,  Esmé Sinnock

My song - 'Idioteque' by the band Radiohead

My Protest song -> 'Idioteque'   - By Radiohead I have chosen the protest song 'Idioteque', by the band Radiohead. It was released in October the 2nd, 2000, as part of the album 'Kid A'. The song is part of a collection of songs that were created by the artist in an attempt to show the 'progression of life', as the album develops. The song is a protest against global warming and the issues that human kind is causing to our environment.  I have chosen this electronica/experimental song to make my music video to as I feel that there are lots of interesting elements and ideas, in terms of lyrics and the format of the song. Hopefully I will be able to utilise these features to enhance my video, and portray the emotion and sense of angst and protest towards global warming in the song ‘Idioteque'. The genre of this song is electronica/experimental. I think that I can also utilise this by adding edgy typical elements that are common for...

Full Textual Analysis 2: "You Need To Calm Down" - By Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift  - 'You Need To Calm Down’ Directed by Drew Kirsch & Taylor Swift CINEMATOGRAPHY This video was shot in Santa Clarita, California. This means that the colours are all very bright and vivid, as the bright sun enhances the bold colours. This in turn keeps all of the scenes exciting and visually interesting to look at.  In addition, the bright colours and lack of dark shadows reflects the overall positive LGBT pride and happy, relaxed tone of the piece, with hints of mockery towards those that are against sexuality freedom and self-expression. Drones are frequently used to capture birds-eye shots of a pool float in the middle of a large paddling pool. This shot type allows us to see the whole pool, and highlights the individual in the centre, creating a more impactful shot. Another birds-eye shot that is filmed by a drone, captures an anti-LGBTQ+ protest group. This is clearly mocking them, making their argument seem completely irrational and unfair. T...

Textual analysis 1: “Land of The Free” - By The Killers CINEMATOGRAPHY POV shots mainly used. This add a feeling of inclusion for the audience, as you feel more involved and as if you are really there. They are filmed by a hand held camera, this amplifies the feeling of involvement, and intensifies the vulnerability that the refugees were feeling, whilst also keeping the audience engaged. They have included many scenes with bright and vivid flashing lights, similar to those used by the emergency services. These are alarming and help to grasp the viewers attention. However, they employ a sense of discomfort, as they reflect unhappiness and feelings of distress and terror.  A thorough use of wide tracking shots. These enable us to grasp the location of the shot, and understand the extreme conditions that these refugees have to face. This sparks emotion amongst the viewer, whilst also helping to tell the story of the journey that is taken. Whilst these shots are heart-wr...
